How Does Frequency And Wavelength Of Light Impact Emergency Lighting?

LED lights are a staple in emergency vehicles. Be it the flashing red and blue lights of a police cruiser or the glaring amber LED lights of a utility truck, their importance in ensuring safety is undisputed. However, one must wonder why particular lights were chosen for different emergency vehicles. To best explain this, it’s important to understand the frequency and wavelength of the visible light spectrum.

Role of light frequency and wavelength.

What is the frequency of light?

As per general scientific consensus, light is made up of photons, which travel in waves. Hence, the frequency of light can be defined as the number of waves passing through any given point per second.

What is the wavelength of light?

As mentioned above, light travels in waves. Hence, the wavelength can be defined as the distance between the crest of two consecutive light waves at any given time.

How do they impact emergency vehicle lighting?

As per the definitions stated above, it is evident that frequency and wavelength are inversely proportional to one another, as shorter waves will travel faster and hence will have a higher frequency. Based on this inference, the visible light spectrum is arranged in this manner: Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red.

Here Violet has the highest frequency and the shortest wavelength whereas red has the lowest frequency and longest wavelength.

Therefore, using red or amber LED lights on the road will offer greater visibility and penetration as the wavelengths of lights are longer. This is why they are used in EMT vehicles, police cruisers, and utility trucks.

Coming to the blue lights used in police cars, the blue is used with the red to create a stark visual contrast. By alternating pulses of blue and red light having different wavelengths, it is easy to grab the attention of other motorists and passersby on the road.
